Clare - Vamp's Cache Explorer for Java Web Start

Launch Clare Now download link

What is Clare?

Clare is Venus Application Publisher's Cache Explorer for Java Web Start. Clare lets you explore Java Web Start's cache by giving you a natural view of the Java Web Start cache.

  • Clare untangles cache entries to restore their original name (e.g. it merges ACvenus.jnlp, ATvenus.jnlp, ALvenus.jnlp and AMvenus.jnlp into one entry named venus.jnlp).
  • Clare checks for timestamps and displays them in natural form and calculates the age measured in days passed by since the last update.
  • Clare checks for certificates and retrieves the signer from the encoded certificate and displays the signer along with all the other cache entry details (such as file size).

Clare uses the jnlpx.home property to locate Java Web Start's cache. Java Web Start will automatically set jnlpx.home if you use it to run Clare and, therefore, spares you any setup hassle. If you are daring enough to run Clare without Java Web Start, you have to set jnlpx.home yourself.

First Impression - Clare in Action

That's how Clare looks like dressed up in a Mozilla theme peeking into Java Web Start's cache.

Limitations - Clare, isn't perfect

Clare is currently a read-only cache explorer. Therefore, you cannot add, delete or change cache entries. Clare also doesn't actively monitor the cache. It just takes a snapshoot. Therefore, if entries are added or deleted, you have to hit the Refresh button to keep your view into the cache up-to-date.

Clare untangles most cache entry types correctly. If Clare fails to recognize a cache entry (such as muffins) it will display it in its mangled form. If an unrecognized cache entry consists of multiple files, each file will be treated as a single entry and no merging will occur.
